Fawz al-Kabeer

Principles of Quranic Exegesis

Synopsis

Then, do they not give serious thought to the Qur‘ān, or do they have locks on their hearts [47:24]

This is the basic primer in the study of the principles surrounding the Tafsir [exegesis] of the Quran which was authored by the great 12-century scholar Shah Waliullah al-Dehlawi.  Owing to its popularity, it remains the fundamental text taught at Islamic seminaries worldwide ever since its completion.

It was written with a very clearly defined purpose: it was to serve as a simplified manual of how Tafsir ought to be conducted. It eschews the intricacies, complexities and inanities of Qur'an related works. What it seeks to provide the reader with is a comprehensive paradigm of how to engage with the Qur'an in extracting meaning from it.
